The Brighter Futures Cup - a new tournament for Manchester community football teams

Footballers from all over the world will gather in Manchester for the very first Brighter Futures Cup later this month. The tournament, which will take place during the FA’s ‘One Game, One Community’ week, is being held at Manchester Grammar School on Saturday 24 October. 12 teams from across Manchester will take part, so spectators will be able to see sides representing the Ugandan and Congolese communities taking on locally born players.

The event is being made possible with support from The Manchester Grammar School, who are providing the venue, and Manchester FA who are sending referees and donating prizes. Manchester City Council is also backing the event with a grant to cover the cost of refreshments and first aid to players and volunteers.

The tournament is being organised by Inter Mancunia, Manchester’s newest community football club. As well hosting a festival of football, they will be using the day to share their knowledge with visiting teams. There will be information and advice on ‘how to set up a new club’ and ‘how to design a club logo’. There will also be entertainment from a live band.

Inter Mancunia Chairperson Jenny Loudon said: ‘We are very excited to be doing this in our first year, and now want to be able to make it a yearly event. We also want to show other teams how they can do it too. But none of it would be possible without the fantastic support of Manchester Grammar School.’  Jenny also hopes to use the tournament as a springboard to form a new league for community football clubs in Greater Manchester, though she stresses that they still need to find sponsorship to make it happen.

The fun starts at 11am. The tournament will be a seven a side competition with group and knockout stages. Two trophies will be up for grabs, and there will be a number of other accolades, including a fair play award and prizes for top scorer and player of the tournament.
